Salzberg Residents
MARIA
SURDUCAN is not your traditional book artist. She is an
illustrator and comic book author
in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Images, she says, are an imprecise way of
translating reality and this, in
a way, makes them more accurate than words. She is particularly drawn to
comics as a storytelling
tool, and has published several graphic albums in French, Romanian, and
Hungarian. Her favorite subjects
are Eastern European myths and folk tales and is fascinated by finding ways
to reshape them for new
generations. Maria is a recipient of the 2020 Alfabéta Award from the
Hungarian Comics Association,
the 2021 Vladimir Colin SF–Fantasy Award, and the 2021 Comic Art Europe
grant and residency.
DOUGLAS PIERRE
BAULOS (Birmingham, Alabama) is the Assistant Professor
of Drawing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the curriculum
director at Studio by the Tracks, an art center that provides free art
classes to
emotionally conflicted children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder or
other mental illnesses. Their drawings, installations, and books have been
exhibited/published both nationally and internationally. Doug's current
works are explorations (visual) and meditations (poetry) centering on their
ideas
of spirituality, love, death, shelter, and hope. Doug received their MFA
from the University of New Orleans and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the
University
of Alabama at Birmingham. They regularly teach workshops and lectures on
their research in book arts, drawing and visual ecology. In 2009 Baulos won
the President’s

JAZ GRAF
(Jersey City, New Jersey) holds a Master of Arts degree in Studio Art
Printmaking from the University of Notre Dame and a Master
of Fine Arts degree in Print Media from the University of Iowa. Her recent
body of work juxtaposes synthetic and raw materials, the virtual gaze
with organic imprints, and satellite imagery with dust, setting in motion a
contemporary discourse around intergenerational memory and cultural
preservation. Jaz exhibits locally and internationally, has been featured in
AM New York News, The Jersey Journal, and on NJ's Public Broadcast
Channel, NJTV. Jaz currently serves on the Exhibitions Committee of the
North American Hand Papermakers. She is former Vice President of Manhattan
Graphics Center, a fine art print shop in New York City, and Board Member of

Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder is the proprietor of Coyote Bones
Press in San Antonio, Texas. Her creative project was a limited edition
artists’ book about the dusky seaside sparrow, a Florida bird declared
extinct in 1990. The project combines primary source research in Florida
with letterpress,
bookbinding, and box making skills.
Merike Van Zanten is a Dutch artist who specializes in eco
printing, a technique of extracting color
and images from plants through steam. Her creative project began with
substantive research and experiments in eco printing
on various substrates and techniques in natural dyes for book arts
applications. Her experiments were bound into an artists’
book unified by technique.
